LAYOFFS: NO LOVE AT KINDRED HEALTHCARE (08/24/21)

Am I Next? Restructuring at Kindred Healthcare.

AUGUST 24, 2021 — KINDRED HOSPITAL CLOSING IN HAMMOND, INDIANA

As part of Franciscan Health’s restructuring efforts, the company will be closing its long-term acute care hospital in Hammond, Indiana effective October 10, 2021.

The decision was driven by the loss of their lease and inability to move the long-term acute care hospital services to another location within Northern Indiana.

The closure will impact 110 employees as a result of the planned building reduction on the Franciscan Health Hammond campus.

Louisville, Kentucky-based Kindred Healthcare, has announced that it will be closing six long-term acute care hospitals in Texas, four hospitals in the Houston, Texas area, and two in Dallas, Texas area. The Dallas area hospitals are scheduled to close on March 15, 2020, and followed by the Houston area hospitals on March 17, 2020. Approximately 541 employees will be impacted. Long-term acute care hospitals provide intensive patient care for terms longer than those offered by more traditional hospitals.

A company spokesperson noted that this was a strategic decision so that “ we can concentrate our resources into providing the best care possible for the community. Reducing the number of hospitals in Dallas and Fort Worth will help ‘eliminate redundancy, improve efficiency and concentrate or specialty programs with the goal of improving quality.’”

The company is privately owned by a consortium of Humana (40%) and private equity investors (60%).

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?
