Borrego Health has announced a continuing restructuring that will impact its administrative and clinical teams resulting in 218 employee layoffs including nurses, phlebotomists, dental staff members, and members of the management team, with separations scheduled for July 24, 2022.

According to Borrego Health CEO, Dr. Edgar Bulloch, Borrego is reducing the size of its administrative team, closing its consolidated call center, reducing clinical staffing, and creating a centralized leadership team to help the organization navigate financial and legal challenges.

"Without question, the past 18 months have been significantly challenging for Borrego Health. Indeed, our patients in Riverside and San Diego counties need Borrego Health. That's why we're doing everything we can to overcome our challenges, even though it means making difficult decisions regarding the size of our workforce and our operational structure."

Borrego Springs, California-based Borrego Community Health Foundation, a federal healthcare provider specializing in providing healthcare services to low-income, government-assisted patients, has announced the closure of facilities in Barstow, California, and San Bernardino, California, and the outsourcing of its in-house billing department to a Florida company.

The closure will impact at least 113 employees, including 52 employees in Barstow and 31 employees in San Bernardino, commencing on February 1. 2022.

According to the company, the decision was driven by lease cancellations at both locations which are currently being litigated in U.S. District Court. The company reportedly has been under criminal investigation since October 2020 for alleged Medicare fraud.

According to a company statement, “We sincerely value all of the contributions made by the impacted employees, and providers, especially during the last two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.” the health care provider said in its statement."
