Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Philips North America, a Dutch health-technology company continuing its transition from a consumer products company into a health-technology company, has announced that it is moving one of its Spectranetics catheter manufacturing facilities from Freemont, California to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. The move will result in 80 layoffs, including engineers, production workers, and assemblers in phased layoffs between March 31, 2021, and April 30, 2021.
According to a company spokesperson, "Philips is moving the operation to the Twin Cities area because of the region’s pool of engineering and manufacturing talent and its proximity to the company’s research-and-development center in nearby Maple Grove, Minnesota. This transfer will substantially expand Philips’ operational presence in Minnesota and reinforces our commitment to business innovation in the region. Further noting that the building lease expires in May 2021.
