AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT CEPHEID

Sunnyvale, California-based Cepheid, a molecular diagnostics company developing systems to automate traditional nucleic acid tests to identify and analyze pathogens and genetic disorders, has announced major organizational changes. The changes include closing a plant in Newark, California, and implementing layoffs at its Sunnyvale headquarters and at another plant in Lodi, California.

The reduction in force will impact over 1,061 employees, including 683 employees at the closing Newark facility, 287 employees at Cepheid's Sunnyvale headquarters (including remote workers), 63 employees at another Newark facility, and 28 employees at the Lodi facility.

According to a spokesperson, The company is monitoring its capacity to match it with pandemic demand, including its non-Covid-testing business. "We're able to adjust the capacity up and downwards, both in terms of units of capacity but also costs, so that is a relatively flexible lever for us, and we'll continue to adjust that lever up or down, both from a capacity perspective as well as a cost perspective.

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?
