LAYOFFS: NO LOVE AT ALBERTSONS (01/13/2021)

Am I Next? Safeway distribution center to close.

JANUARY 13, 2021 COMPANY DRIVERS BEING REPLACED BY INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS OPERATED BY THIRD-PARTIES

The company has announced that it is altering its distribution model.

The change will see mass layoffs among grocery store delivery drivers currently employed by the company and its branded subsidiaries. Services will be provided by independent contractors working for third-party app-based companies like DoorDash, Uber, and Lyft.

The decision was driven by the benefits of lower-cost delivery, fewer HR liabilities and union issues, and the ability to align resources to revenues without excessive personnel costs.

Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons Companies has announced that its Safeway subsidiary will lay off 520 employees at its Upper Marlboro, Maryland distribution center in order to further consolidate its logistics operations. Operations associated with supplying stores in the Baltimore and District of Colombia area will be transferred to the company’s distribution center in Denver, Pennsylvania. The distribution center is scheduled to be completely closed in August 2020 and the property be sold.

A company spokesperson noted that supplying the region's 275 Acme and mid-Atlantic Safeway stores from a single distribution center located in Pennsylvania will help fuel the company’s investments and benefit its e-commerce business, its brick-and-mortar stores, and its customers, while creating a more efficient supply chain that will allow the company to reduce waste.”

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?
