AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT TUR-PAK FOODS

Sioux City, Iowa-based Tur-Pak Foods, a turkey processing plant and private label co-packer, has announced the closure of its processing facility in Sioux City, Iowa.

The closure will impact 121 employees and is scheduled for May 9, 2022.

It is unknown if the closure is market-driven or related to a "human trafficking" federal lawsuit filed in 2020 and 2021 alleging that J-1 foreign exchange students from Brazil and Chile were exploited as cheap labor at Tur-Pak in exchange for their education at Western Iowa Tech Community College.

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT SHEARER'S FOODS

Massillon, Ohio-based Shearer's Foods, a manufacturer of snack products including potato chips, tortillas, whole grain chips, cheese curls/puffs, popcorn, pork rinds, rice crisps, wafers, cookies, and both sweet and savory biscuits, has announced that a boiler explosion and fire at the Shearer’s Foods plant in Hermiston, Oregon, has destroyed the facility.

The forced shutdown will result in 400 layoffs.

According to CEO Bill Nictakis, “After assessing the damage, it’s clear that the destruction is too great to quickly rebuild and begin production in the near term. It would take at least 15-18 months to rebuild and restart production."

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT RICH PRODUCTS

Am I Next? Rich Products closes Frezno frozen dough plant.

Buffalo, New York-based Rich Products Corporation, multinational food products producer, hasannounced the closure of its 98-year-old frozen dough plant in Fresno, California.

The closure will impact 111 employees and layoffs are scheduled to commence in November 2021 with a second and final phase scheduled for the end of March 2022.

A statement from a company spokesperson notes, “Based on business and capital assessments, Rich Products has made the difficult decision to close our Fresno, CA manufacturing site and move production to our Lodi, CA and Murfreesboro, TN facilities. Fresno’s 98-year-old infrastructure and current capabilities have limited our ability to meet market demands for more fully finished products. Production is slated to cease in February 2022, with operations shutting down at the end of March 2022. Moving production to Lodi and Murfreesboro offers us greater capabilities for further expansion in the future and is the right decision as we continue to create value for our customers. “This decision is in no way a reflection of the team in Fresno, who has a long history of strong performance and service to our customers.”
