AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT KPMG (07/08/23)

JULY 8, 2023 — 1,950 U.S. JOBS TO BE CUT

In a second round of layoffs, KPMG announced they will be reducing the U.S. workforce by 5%, or approximately 1,950 employees, including those in advisory, tax, and audit services.

The decision is being driven by business conditions and the lack of activity as firms wait out a chaotic political and financial environment.

London, England-based KPMG International, one of the Big Four accounting and consulting organizations, has announced a major reduction in force.

The personnel adjustment will impact two percent of its workforce, including 700 employees within the United States.

According to Carl Carande, vice-chair of KPMG's US advisory business, "We continue to have more people than needed to meet current demand. The reductions are spread across the US and across the consulting business but do not include any partners.

“We have experienced prolonged uncertainty affecting certain parts of our advisory business that drove outsized growth in recent years."

“These actions are incredibly difficult and impact people’s lives. We are supporting our colleagues with a holistic package that includes severance, healthcare, emotional and well-being support, career counseling, and learning and development opportunities.”

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT AVALARA

Seattle, Washington-based Avalara, the tax accounting platform that specializes in multi-tax compliance, has announced a reduction in force.

It appears that the layoffs are related to Avalara's October 2022, acquisition by Austin, Texas-based private equity firm Vista Equity Partners for $8.4 billion.

The company has refused to comment on the layoffs.

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT DELOITTE (04/21/23)

Am I Next? Major reduction in force at Deloitte accounting and consultancy operations.

APRIL 21, 2023 — 1,200 U.S. EMPLOYEES TARGETED

The company has announced that it will lay off 1,200 U.S. employees, approximately 1.5% of its workforce, mostly in the financial advisory service teams as merger and acquisition activity declines.

A Deloitte spokesperson noted, “Our US businesses continue to experience strong client demand. As growth in select practices moderates, we are taking modest personnel actions where necessary.”

London, England-based Deloitte, one of the largest accounting and consultancy service networks in the world, has announced a major reduction in force which may impact 5,000+ employees in the United States. It is unknown if all of Deloitte's divisions, audit, consulting, advisory, and tax, will be affected, but it is thought that consulting and advisory divisions may take the hardest hit as a “severe and prolonged” impact is expected to Fiscal Year 2022.

According to a company spokesperson, "in connection with our annual fiscal year-end financial planning and performance management processes, we are aligning our resources with our clients' evolving needs. Demand for our services continues to be strong and we are doing all that we can to minimize the impact on our people in this unprecedented environment.”

Look for additional employee impacts from increased hours and decreased assignments. Some suggest that this right-sizing is a result of over-hiring and keeping individuals "with connections" on the payroll.
