AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT APEEL SCIENCES

Goleta, California-based Apeel Sciences, a supplier of edible, freshness-preserving coatings to the agricultural industry, has announced another round of layoffs.

In this second round of layoffs announced in 2022, the reduction in force will impact 96 employees from its Goleta office in a phased layoff. 71 employees are scheduled to be laid off on January 15, 2023; another 11 employees by March 31, 2023, and the final round of workers, 14 workers by June 30, 2023.

A total of 120 employees, including those in other locations, will be laid off.

According to a company spokesperson, “We developed some inefficiencies that needed to be addressed for the future of our business. We were admittedly optimistic about the position we would be in following the previous layoffs, and we underestimated economic headwinds and the extent to which we’d need to restructure to ensure the future of our company. It is never easy, and there is no good way or right time to do a layoff, but we felt it was necessary to take this step now."

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT FRESH N' LEAN

Anaheim, California-based Nutrition Corp, operating as Fresh n' Lean, an organic, ready-to-eat subscription meal delivery service, has announced the relocation of its facilities out of California.

The relocation initiative will see the partial closure of its Anaheim, California production and warehouse facility and the layoff of 353 employees responsible for manufacturing, packing, and shipping a variety of Nutrition Corp’s products. Layoffs are scheduled to commence on November 27, 2022.

According to a company statement, the decision is based on logistical requirements and a desire “to better serve customers living in other parts of the country.”

A number of similar companies are downsizing and reducing costs as the effects of the stay-at-home pandemic orders are canceled and people return to other meal options. There was no mention of California’s minimum wage increases or its hostile business environment.

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT GATE GOURMET

Am I Next? Gate Gourmet to reduce airport catering staff.

Reston, Virginia-based Gate Gourmet, a subsidiary of Glattbrugg, Switzerland-based Gategroup, a vendor of food services and onboard retail shopping to the airline industry, has announced a mass layoff of California workers.

Approximately 536 employees are impacted, including 247 employees at Los Angeles International Airport and 289 employees at San Francisco International Airport. Layoffs are scheduled for November 19, 2021.

The decision was driven by the pandemic slowdown in airline travel, the hospitality industry, and local pandemic conditions at travel destinations. According to a company spokesperson, "The government funding that has been helpful to supporting additional employment beyond our business needs is coming to an end and the company can no longer maintain current employment levels."
