West Palm Beach, Florida-based American Sugar Refining, a cane sugar refining company, has announced the closure of its Domino Sugar refinery located in Yonkers, New York, at the end of 2025.
The closure will impact 300-350 employees, with an additional 140 indirect employees. The company's twenty-four-acre site is extremely valuable and will be sold to developers.
According to a company statement, “ASR’s strategically positioned network of operations is one of our core strengths, and staying ahead of evolving customer demands is essential to maintaining our competitive advantage. Our multi-year strategy includes major investments in acquisitions, new facility construction, expansions and modernization of existing assets as well as capital and process improvement projects that are making our operations and supply chain network even stronger.”
Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life, nor promises of a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something terrible hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, at any time, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. While many employees can read the writing on the wall, why do most assume it’s targeted at someone else? Are you now wondering, Am I Next?
