AM I NEXT? LAYOFFS AT CARBON HEALTH

JANUARY 8, 2023 — RESTRUCTURING WITH ANOTHER 200+ LAYOFFS

The has announced a restructuring that will see the abandonment of previous initiatives in public health, remote patient monitoring, hardware, and chronic care programs to focus on its core primary care & urgent care services.

The initiative will impact more than 200 employees in a second round of layoffs

Carbon Health CEO Eren Bali noted, “We had to make some really hard decisions at CarbonHealth. We're unwinding major initiatives like public health, RPM, hardware, and chronic care programs to focus on our core primary care & urgent care service. And we've reduced our global workforce by more than 200 people. The current market conditions force us to be more diligent, focused, and patient. We're sad to see our colleagues go, but I couldn't be more proud of what we achieved together."

San Francisco, California-based Carbon Health, a chain of primary healthcare clinics offering both traditional and telemedicine options, has announced a major reduction in force.

The reduction will impact 250 employees.

According to a message from Carbon Health CEO Eren Bali...

"Yesterday, we announced the difficult decision to part ways with about 250 of our teammates at Carbon Health, representing approximately 8% of our global workforce. It is with both deep sadness and a true sense of gratitude that we said goodbye to those colleagues.

Decisions like this are excruciating. However, given myriad external factors including the capital markets, I believe this decision is in the best interest of our patients, customers, partners, investors, and, ultimately, our team.

There are two reasons we made this decision despite the fact that our business is continuing to grow very quickly:

While our core business grew 4x in 2021 and will double again in 2022, we – like most healthcare providers – had significant revenue from COVID-specific lines of business. As COVID is entering a new phase, we are winding down some of those COVID-specific lines of business and that, unfortunately, means parting ways with some colleagues.

For the last few years, we have been more focused on topline revenue growth, patient acquisition, patient retention and service expansion, and we have been less focused on profitability. While that was the right decision in 2020 and 2021, the macro environment with more volatile capital markets means it is vital that we become less focused on growth and more focused on profitability.

These changes, alongside a number of non-personnel related reductions in operating expenses, will allow Carbon Health to be profitable much earlier than we had originally planned, which is the prudent thing to do in today's market.

Our mission – making great healthcare accessible – remains unchanged. The difficult actions we took were necessary to strengthen our position both financially and strategically for the future, and they set us up to deliver on that mission for our patients, providers, partners and employees.

We are proud of our team and grateful for the contributions of every employee, including those leaving us. They have done important and impactful work, and have helped make healthcare meaningfully better."

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT SAINT CHARLES HEALTH SYSTEM

Bend, Oregon-based St. Charles Health System, a private not-for-profit four-hospital network and healthcare company in Central Oregon, has announced a cost-cutting initiative that will result in a reduction in the workforce.

The reduction in force will impact 181 positions, including 105 caregivers, and the elimination of 76 unfilled positions.

The decision was driven by operating losses, reduced revenues, rising supply costs, and the rising cost of contract labor.

According to St. Charles President and CEO Joe Sluka, “For the past two years, our caregivers have taken on and conquered unprecedented challenges to care for our community, which is why it feels particularly unfair that we now find ourselves in this position. While our financial situation isn’t unlike many other health systems around the country, this decision hurts. These are our people."

“It has taken two long years of the pandemic to get us into this situation and it will take at least two years for us to get out of it. But we will. And we will continue to take excellent care of our community now and in the future.”
