AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT DUKE UNIVERSITY HEALTHCARE (07/26/25)

JULY 26, 2025 — 599 VOLUNTARY BUYOUTS, NOW COMES THE PAIN OF LAYOFFS

The University is now moving past their offer of voluntary buyouts to preparing for involuntary layoffs across campus in August 2025.

According to a spokesperson, “We determined that an involuntary reduction in force is necessary only after careful consideration and extensive consultation with leadership across Duke. Ahead of the layoffs, all university units will be asked to identify further non-personnel budget cuts they can implement, which will determine the scale of the layoffs. We recognize and are sorry for the impact these changes will have on our colleagues.”

Durham, North Carolina-based Duke University Health System, a multi-organizational integrated healthcare institution, has announced an organizational restructuring that it claims will “right-size and realign” its structure, both administratively and operationally.

The organizational realignment will impact 280 positions.

According to a statement provided by Duke Health officials, “After careful consideration and in-depth analysis over many months, Duke University Health System has identified opportunities to right-size and realign the structure of some of its administrative and operational functions.

"Approximately 280 positions were identified for reduction. Positions will primarily be reduced through retirements, redeployments, and closures of vacant positions. Fewer than 50 positions in administrative and managerial roles are affected. These employees will be provided support through outplacement services and redeployments where possible."

"Duke University Health System remains steadfast in its mission to advance the way we deliver care and remain a vital resource to those who come to us for hope, health, and healing.”

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?

Franklin, Tennessee-based Acadia Healthcare, a provider of addiction, psychiatric, and behavioral healthcare services, has announced the closure of its Cascade Behavioral Health Hospital, a 137-bed psychiatric facility located in Tukwila, Washington.

The closure will impact 288 employees as it ceases operations on July 31, 2023.

According to a company statement, “Cascade has made the difficult decision to close its operations by July 31. Prior to our closure, Cascade will work with state and local agencies to ensure an orderly transition of remaining patients to the appropriate services as determined by the clinical treatment team."

"Through COVID and other complexities, Cascade proudly remained steadfast in our commitment to our patients and community. However, the breadth of challenges created a situation where the long-term viability of the hospital was no longer sustainable."

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. AM I NEXT? IS THE HANDWRITING ON THE WALL AT SYNEOS? HEALTH?

Morrisville, North Carolina-based Syneos Health, a biotechnology company offering contract research to assist companies with late-stage clinical trials, has announced that the company will be taken private by a consortium of investors including the notorious activist investor Elliott Investment Management. Elliot is known for extensive cost-cutting, personnel reductions, divestment of non-performing assets, large dividend transfers to shareholders, and management changes.

Elliot's hand in the operations is obvious as Syneos, earlier this year, began implementing cost management initiatives, including "right-sizing and realigning" its workforce while streamlining its organizational structure. The company also began evaluating its global facilities footprint.

According to Board Chairman John Dineen ...

"The Syneos Health Board of Directors unanimously determined that this all-cash transaction maximizes value for our shareholders and is in the best interests of the company and all stakeholders. We believe this transaction will enable Syneos Health to continue to accelerate its growth strategy, enhance customer delivery and evolve the organization toward a tech-enabled future."

The deal is expected to close in the second half of this year, pending approval by Syneos shareholders and other closing conditions. After the deal closes, Syneos will become a private company.
