AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT MEDIFAST

Baltimore, Maryland-based Medifast, a nutrition and weight loss company that produces, distributes, and sells weight loss and health-related products through websites, multi-level marketing, telemarketing, and franchised weight loss clinics, has announced a reduction in force.

Approximately 83 employees are impacted by the reduction in shifts at the company's 119,000-square-foot distribution center in Ridgely, Maryland.

Additional jobs at the company's internal Global Call Center Operations team and at its manufacturing facility in Owings Mills, Maryland will also be eliminated.

CEO Dan Chard noted, "While we are focused on driving the long-term success of our business, there’s no doubt that this continues to be a difficult market for many consumer-facing businesses right now. With inflationary pressures continuing to mount, and the related impact on consumer confidence, we’ve seen an effect on product demand."

"The tremendous growth we saw through 2020 and 2021 meant we needed to increase call center support staff and we did so on an accelerated timeframe. With the current and forecasted volume outlook, it’s clear that we need to shift the call center footprint and resources to reflect our business forecast. At the same time, lower volume means that we have reduced operational requirements in our supply chain organization. We have spent time evaluating our supply chain footprint and the best way to balance capacity versus volume. We have come to the decision to eliminate some roles and not backfill others at Owings Mills, as well as reduce the number of shifts at [the Medifast Distribution Center], effective as of July and August."

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life or promises for a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something bad hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. Are you now wondering, Am I Next?

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT ENLIVANT

Chicago, Illinois-based Enlivant, a management-operator of assisted living facilities, has announced a major reduction in force at its Chicago Support Center due to financial difficulties.

The reduction in force will impact 284 employees on a phased schedule beginning on July 16, 2023, and continuing through December 2023.

It appears that the owners of multiple assisted living facilities are reconfiguring their portfolio, which cast some doubt on its joint venture’s 157-community Enlivant portfolio’s ability to continue as a going concern. The audit said the COVID-19 pandemic had created significant cost increases and lost revenue, resulting in declining income and cash flow that led to a default of its credit facility and portage notes debt agreements.

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT DUKE UNIVERSITY HEALTHCARE (07/26/25)

JULY 26, 2025 — 599 VOLUNTARY BUYOUTS, NOW COMES THE PAIN OF LAYOFFS

The University is now moving past their offer of voluntary buyouts to preparing for involuntary layoffs across campus in August 2025.

According to a spokesperson, “We determined that an involuntary reduction in force is necessary only after careful consideration and extensive consultation with leadership across Duke. Ahead of the layoffs, all university units will be asked to identify further non-personnel budget cuts they can implement, which will determine the scale of the layoffs. We recognize and are sorry for the impact these changes will have on our colleagues.”

The organizational realignment will impact 280 positions.

According to a statement provided by Duke Health officials, “After careful consideration and in-depth analysis over many months, Duke University Health System has identified opportunities to right-size and realign the structure of some of its administrative and operational functions.

"Approximately 280 positions were identified for reduction. Positions will primarily be reduced through retirements, redeployments, and closures of vacant positions. Fewer than 50 positions in administrative and managerial roles are affected. These employees will be provided support through outplacement services and redeployments where possible."

"Duke University Health System remains steadfast in its mission to advance the way we deliver care and remain a vital resource to those who come to us for hope, health, and healing.”
