The company will continue its product line restructuring plan to discontinue some Medicare Advantage.

The product line shift will impact 220 employees, including 127 in Virginia.

According to the company, “Industry-wide headwinds and market dynamics, including reimbursement trends and regulatory changes, are leading many insurers to reassess their participation in Medicare Advantage. These products are no longer financially sustainable in the current environment.”

“While approximately 400 positions were identified, by not filling 180 open/vacant positions, we were able to limit the impact. The majority of the positions are within Sentara Health Plans, with the remaining being corporate shared services positions that primarily support health plan operations.”

“These decisions are not made lightly, and our focus remains on communicating directly with our colleagues and supporting them through this transition. Impacted employees will receive at least 60 days’ notice, and Sentara is committed to supporting them with career transition services, severance benefits, and opportunities to apply for other roles within the organization.”

Hampton Roads, Virginia-based Sentara Health, an integrated, not-for-profit healthcare delivery system, has announced a reduction in force to compensate for a loss of enrolled members since states began rechecking eligibility for their Medicaid rolls.

The personnel realignment will impact 200 employees, including leadership and staff support positions. The majority of the layoffs are associated with the health plan division.

According to President and CEO Dennis Matheis, “There has been a significant decline in Medicaid membership across the U.S. and Virginia. For Sentara Health Plans, this has resulted in a loss of over 115,000 members, which is approximately 16% of our Medicaid membership, in the past year. These workforce adjustments align our staffing levels with our health plan membership. These individuals have been dedicated and mission-driven team members, and we are grateful for their passion and contributions to the organization and to the community.”

Houston, Texas-based Texas Children's Hospital, a freestanding 973-bed acute care women's and children's hospital, has announced a 5% reduction in its workforce, including leadership and front-line caregivers.

The reduction will impact approximately 1,000 employees

A hospital spokesperson noted, "This has been so challenging and so difficult for us to get here. We have been really thoughtful about it … and we do not plan to have additional job cuts or job eliminations. The layoffs come after Texas Children's took a series of other steps to mitigate financial challenges, including reducing the size of its executive leadership team by about 10% and cutting their pay."

The hospital has been plagued by lower patient volumes, long-term financial challenges, a ratings downgrade, issues regarding continuing Medicaid funding, and a controversy over gender-affirming surgeries.

Dallas, Texas-based Steward Health Care, a private for-profit healthcare system that uses an integrated care model to deliver healthcare across its hospitals and primary care locations, as well as through its managed care and health insurance services, has announced the closure of two Massachusetts acute care hospitals

The closures will impact 1,250 employees, including 753 workers at Carney Hospital and 490 workers at Nashoba Valley Medical Center.

According to a spokesperson, “The decision to close both Carney and Nashoba hospitals is one we deeply regret having to make. Steward is acutely aware of the difficulties this will impose on our dedicated and hardworking employees.”
