Glen Allen, Virginia-based GENETWORx, a specialized laboratory offering molecular diagnostic testing, including COVID-19, pharmacogenetics and pathogen testing, has announced a reduction in force.

The worforce rebalancing will impact 61 employees, including 31 at the company's headquarters, and the layoffs will be completed in August 2021.

The decision was driven by a reduction in COVID-19 testing as vaccination levels rise. The company previously hired hundreds of workers to meet the demand of pre-vaccine testing.

According to a company spokesperson, “This reduction will impact a portion of our employees and contract workers involved in the execution of our COVID-testing business.”

The company will continue to offer COVID-19 testing through both at-home kits and on-site testing services for clients such as schools, businesses, healthcare providers and state and local governments.

San Diego-based Progenity, a biotechnology company specializating in the developiment and commercialization of molecular testing products, has announced that it will implement a reduction in force that will impact 374 Progenity and Avero, a Progenity affiliate.

The company will close its genetic testing lab in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The closure will impact 110 employees with layoffs commencing on August 6, 2021.

It is unknown how much the layoff decision was driven by the July 2020, $49 million settlement with the U.S. government for allegations of fraudulently billing federal healthcare programs for prenatal tests and providing kickbacks to physicians.

Accordingto a company spokesperson, the company is executing a "transformation strategy that will focus the company primarily on its robust R&D pipeline and better position the business for future growth. To achieve this vision, simplify its business model, and unlock shareholder value, the company will seek to reallocate resources to R&D and materially reduce operating expenditures by approximately 70%."

The company has announced 121 layoffs at its West Norriton, Pennsylvania facility, which will start on August 26, 2024, and be completed by the end of 2024. Operations will be transferred to a company facility in Lenexa, Kansas.

Secaucus, New Jersey-based Quest Diagnostics, an owner-operator of free-standing and in-hospital clinical laboratories, has announced the consolidation of its Horsham, Pennsylvania facility with its nearby (22 miles) facility in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

The consolidation will impact 154 employees, including 99 clinical laboratory workers, 42 specimen management workers, 9 anatomic pathology workers, 3 quality assurance workers and a materials manager. Layoffs are scheduled to commence on July 16, 2021.
