AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT SHARP HEALTHCARE

San Diego, California-based Sharp HealthCare, a not-for-profit regional health care group operating four acute care hospitals, three specialty hospitals, and three affiliated medical groups, has announced a 1.5% reduction in force.

The reduction will impact 315 employees.

According to a statement released by the company...

"The economic conditions in health care have dramatically changed over the last five years, and it has become increasingly clear that Sharp HealthCare is not immune to the related challenges. To navigate these changes and maintain Sharp’s position as San Diego’s health care leader for generations to come, the organization has made the extremely difficult decision to reduce its workforce. This includes the elimination of 315 employees (1.5% of the workforce) across all levels of the organization — including senior executive leadership — as well as reductions in hours and role adjustments for some positions. The vast majority of these positions are in nonclinical areas of the organization, resulting in minimal impact to direct patient care."

“Our employees are the heart of our organization, and we value each and every one of them. We do not make these decisions lightly nor without compassion for those impacted, and we are committed to supporting those affected during this challenging transition with career transition support, severance packages, extended health care coverage and other resources to assist them in continuing their careers.”

"This unfortunate, but necessary, action follows a lengthy and comprehensive market review and thorough analysis of key financial challenges facing Sharp and health systems nationwide. These include rising costs consistently outpacing revenues because of increasing labor costs; capital expenditures related to state-mandated seismic requirements; and inadequate reimbursement from Medicare, Medi-Cal and commercial payers."

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life, nor promises of a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something terrible hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, at any time, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. While many employees can read the writing on the wall, why do most assume it’s targeted at someone else? Are you now wondering, Am I Next?

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER

Nashville, Tennessee-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center, an independent non-profit medical system with multiple hospitals and clinics in Tennessee, has announced a $300 million cost-cutting initiative.

The reduction in force will impact 650 staff employees, primarily in research, administrative, and other support areas.

According to a spokesperson, “In response to the impact of budgetary actions in Washington, DC, related to government-sponsored research and patient care, VUMC is reducing operating costs by more than $300 million and reducing its workforce. While this is extremely difficult, the staffing loss represents less than 2% of VUMC's total workforce. To support affected employees, VUMC is providing severance packages and other assistance.”

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT INCYTE DIAGNOSTICS

Spokane Valley, Washington-based Incyte Diagnostics, following the recent acquisition of select assets of its clinical and anatomic pathology testing businesses by Burlington, North Carolina-based Labcorp, has issued a WARN notice affecting all 310 of its employees who may be laid off starting August 4, 2025..

This legal notification, required under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, is a precautionary step triggered by the change in ownership and potential restructuring.

While the notice formally signals the possibility of job losses, it does not necessarily mean all employees will be laid off. Labcorp may choose to retain some or all of the existing workforce as part of the integration process.

Incyte pathologists will continue to offer professional anatomic pathology services to examine and interpret tissue samples, while Labcorp will provide tissue processing and slide preparation services.

The issuance of the WARN notice ensures compliance with federal labor laws while providing employees with transparency and time to prepare for any changes to their employment status.

Similar notices may be filed for other locations as the assets that Labcorp is acquiring involve multiple same-day testing labs and some technical assets of Incyte Diagnostics’ anatomic pathology business, including its two labs in Spokane Valley and its patient service center locations in North Spokane, Deer Park, Post Falls, Hayden, and elsewhere. The pending acquisition also includes Incyte's labs in Tukwila, Washington; Richland, Washington; and Missoula, Montana.
