AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT MASSPORT

Am I Next? Massport reduction in force.

Boston, Massachusetts-based Massachusetts Port Authority, the port authority owner-operator of various public infrastructure including airports—Logan International Airport, Hanscom Field, Worcester Regional Airport, and public terminals in the Port of Boston, has announced the layoff off 200 employees

The decision was driven to reduce headcount to compensate for historically lower passenger activity at Logan International.

According to a spokesperson, "Approximately a third of the targeted cuts have come through a voluntary buyout program. that offered a $20,000 one-time lump sum payment to eligible union employees if they retired by January 1, 2021 and a similar offer of $20,000 payment to administrative employees who chose to leave by early January, 2021. The remainder 200 people would be involuntarily laid off. These cuts are impacting all departments and are painful decisions. We are thankful for the work of our dedicated staff.

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT EVO TRANSPORTATION & ENERGY SERVICES

Am I Next? Evo Transportation & Energy Services - facility closure.

Phoenix, Arizona-based EVO Transportation and Energy Services, a transportation operator providing cargo and fuel carriers nationwide, has announced that it will be permanently closing its Austin, Texas facility and laying off 104 employees commencing January 9, 2021.

According to a company statement, the facility closing was "due to unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances caused by a large client unexpectedly notifying EVO that it had chosen a new contractor."

According to various filings, the company is under financial stress and "EVO’s stock is highly illiquid and rarely trades, EVO does not have access to capital markets (it sought unsuccessfully in March to raise equity from third parties in a private placement) and presently nearly all of EVO’s investors are unable to sell shares. EVO’s small market float is measured in thousands of dollars, not hundreds of millions of dollars."

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT BNSF RAILWAY (05/08/25)

Am I Next? BNSF consolidation yields mass layoffs.

MAY 8, 2025 — 175 TECHNOLOGY EMPLOYEES

The company has restructured its technology services department, leading to a reduction in force impacting approximately 175 employees.

According to a company spokesperson, “Following the announcement of a strategic initiative to transform the future of our rail operations through innovation, BNSF is changing its technology workforce for a newly created division called BNSF | TECH. This new organization will be infused with new investment and an expanded team of software engineers focused on building a safer, smarter railroad. As part of this transition, some Technology Services positions are being repurposed or eliminated, as BNSF | TECH will have a reduced reliance on contractors and third-party vendors over time. As in the past, BNSF remains committed to supporting employees affected by personnel changes, and applicable resources and career transition services are shared with impacted employees.”

OCTOBER 23, 2020 — 104 LAYOFFS AT TOPEKA, KANSAS LOCOMOTIVE SHOP

Continuing to respond to a business decline, the company has announced that layoffs are continuing, specifically the layoff of 104 employees at their Topeka Locomotive Shop commencing November 4, 2020.

Fort Worth, Texas-based BNSF Railway Company, the largest freight railroad network in North America, is continuing its reorganization, consolidation, and cost-cutting efforts to address the dramatic downturn in the economy, and specifically the reduced shipments or oil, gas, and coal. These actions will affect 344 employees, including 122 Wyoming workers at mechanical maintenance facilities at the company's Donkey Creek Yard (Rozet, Wyoming) and Guernsey Yard (Guernsey, Wyoming), both of which will be permanently closed in June and July 2020.

Additionally, the diesel locomotive maintenance shop in Glendive, Montana will be permanently closed along with other maintenance layoffs in Alliance, Nebraska; Topeka, Kansas; Lincoln, Nebraska Minot, North Dakota, Mandan, North Dakota, and Superior, Wisconsin.

According to a company spokesperson...

"Unfortunately, this is a long-term structural market shift that will have a lasting impact on BNSF and the rail industry. In addition, we've seen declines in crude oil shipments in the Bakken region and a significant reduction in locomotives required to support volumes on the network. We value our scheduled workforce and it is difficult to make changes like these that impact our employees and their families. However, the actions we are taking are essential to ensure a competitive cost structure in the changing business environment."

A second spokesperson noted...

"Similar to the size of our train, yard and engine workforce, our mechanical teams must match the demand for traffic moved by our railroad. With volumes lower than anticipated due to several factors, including changes in the coal and energy sector, the number of rail cars and locomotives moving on our network and thus repairs needed, have decreased." "We understand the significant impact this has on our employees and the communities in which they live. We are working diligently to connect them with available resources, while also offering the option to potentially transfer to a number of open positions at other locations in our network."
