AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT DETROT AXLE

Ferndale, Michigan-based Detroit Axle, a manufacturer and distributor of remanufactured and new aftermarket parts, has announced the closure of its Ferndale, Michigan warehouse and transitioning operations to its 225,000 sq ft distribution center in El Paso, Texas.

The closure will impact 102 employees, effective August 25, 2025.

According to CEO Mike Musheinesh, "The decision to close this facility is due to unforeseen circumstances, specifically the sudden imposition of government tariffs, which have significantly disrupted our supply chain and sharply increased the costs of goods. These changes have had a direct and unanticipated impact on our warehouse operations, making it financially unsustainable to continue operating this facility."

Change is coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life, nor promises of a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something terrible hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, at any time, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. While many employees can read the writing on the wall, why do most assume it’s targeted at someone else? Are you now wondering, Am I Next?

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT ADAPTIMMUNE

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based Adaptimmune, a biopharmaceutical company that develops T cell therapies against cancer, has announced a major restructuring, including the sale of intellectual property to Louisville, Kentucky-based US WorldMeds Partners, and a 62% reduction in its workforce.

The layoffs will impact approximately 300 employees. Earlier reductions included a 29% workforce reduction completed in early 2025. It is not known how many employees will be hired by US WorldMeds.

"As part of the Restructuring, Elliot Norry, our Chief Medical Officer, and Cintia Piccina, our Chief Commercial Officer, will cease to be employed by Adaptimmune LLC as of August 8, 2025, and Joanna Brewer, our Chief Scientific Officer, will cease to be employed by Adaptimmune Limited as of August 31, 2025. As previously disclosed, Gavin Wood, our Chief Financial Officer, will cease to be employed by Adaptimmune Limited as of August 31, 2025."

CEO Adrian Rawcliffe noted, “Adaptimmune has been at the forefront of solid tumor cell therapy and delivering groundbreaking treatments to patients for more than a decade. We were the first company to obtain a marketing authorization for an engineered TCR T-cell therapy, TECELRA, and we have a second cell therapy, lete-cel, with approval anticipated in 2026. However, given the financial situation of the Company, it is clear that securing the right strategic option was critical to maximize value for all of our stakeholders and, importantly, ensure our patients continue to receive TECELRA. After an extensive review of all strategic alternatives available to Adaptimmune, we are convinced that this transaction represents the best path forward for Adaptimmune, our patients, and stakeholders.”

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT RUAN TRANSPORT

Des Moines, Iowa-based Ruan Transport, a transportation and logistics company that provides dedicated contract transportation, managed transportation, value-added warehousing, and brokerage support services, has announced a reduction in its workforce after losing a contract with The Kroger Co.

The reduction will affect 144 employees, including 130 truck drivers, as well as mechanics and administrative staff, in Tolleson, Arizona, and is expected to be completed by the end of August 2025.

Ruan will be replaced by Knight-Swift Transportation, a Phoenix, Arizona-based company that is not unionized.

It appears that the Teamsters are unhappy with the decision and may attempt to pressure Kroger directly. “For over 26 years, Teamsters Local 104 members at Ruan have safely and reliably delivered products for Kroger. Now, the company is attempting to replace them with Swift, a move that threatens the hard-won standards Teamsters have built over decades.”
