Chicago, Illinois-based Illinois Institute of Technology, a private research university, has announced a staff reduction prior to the commencement of its fall semester.

The reduction in force will impact 160 faculty and staff members.

According to Illinois Tech President Raj Echambadi, “The university's finances have taken a hit from declines in research funding and foreign student enrollment. The university has no choice but to pursue targeted reductions to address these challenges and protect our mission as an opportunity engine for all. As always, we will continue to place students at the center of all that we do and to ensure educational excellence at Illinois Tech.”

Change is constant, and it's coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life, nor promises of a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something terrible hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, at any time, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. While many employees can read the writing on the wall, why do most assume it’s targeted at someone else? Are you now wondering, Am I Next?

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT DAIMLER TRUCK NORTH AMERICA

Portland, Oregon-based Daimler Truck North America, an automotive industry manufacturer of commercial vehicles, has announced that it will relocate its Swan Island Freightliner and Western Star truck manufacturing operation from Portland to larger facilities in North and South Carolina.

The relocation will impact 375 employees and is scheduled for the end of October 2026.

According to a company spokesperson, “It’s a network decision. Portland’s production profile is different from our larger plants. It’s not an indictment on Portland and what Portland’s offering.”

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT BUZZFEED

New York City, New York-based BuzzFeed, an internet media, news, and entertainment company focused on digital media, is conducting a 35% post-acquisition restructuring and reduction in force after its $120 million purchase on May 27, 2026.

The reduction will affect 180 employees across the BuzzFeed, HuffPost and Tasty media properties.

According to a company statement, “Today we are making important changes to BuzzFeed that are required to put our business on a path to profitable and sustainable growth. Four months ago, in our March earnings call, we stated a substantial doubt about the company’s ability to continue as a going concern. Fortunately, after that public announcement, Byron Allen quickly stepped in and made an investment of approximately 26 million dollars into BuzzFeed to stabilize, protect, and grow the company. We’ve been actively managing costs for some time, working through scenarios to save as many jobs as possible. Unfortunately, the elimination of certain roles is still required.”
