Binghamton, New York-based Felchar Manufacturing Corporation, a maker of electric motors and other industrial and commercial products has announced that it will be laying off 144 employees, one-third of the workforce, at its Kirkwood facility in Binghamton. The company makes components for Shop-Vac Corporation’s iconic wet/dry shop vacuum systems and operates as a subsidiary of Williamsport, Pennsylvania-based Shop-Vac corporation. When queried about the decision, a company spokesperson replied that the decision was economic. Given the shift to manufacturing Shop-Vac parts in Shenzhen, China and in Hai Duong, Vietnam and then shipping the parts to Feldchar for assembly, one might assume that this is simply another step in Shop-Vac’s outsourcing plan.
