AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT HEARTLAND HUMAN CARE SERVICES

Chicago, Illinois-based Heartland Human Care Services, a provider of various social services, including housing, advocacy, and refugee support, has announced the closure of three of its Illinois facilities serving unaccompanied migrant children.

The closures will impact 140 employees, with layoffs scheduled for April 2026.

The decision was driven by reduced federal and state funding, the need for operational efficiency, and a consolidation of their youth residential program.

A spokesperson noted, “After careful consideration, we made the difficult decision to consolidate sites to ensure greater operational efficiency and long-term sustainability. We are deeply proud of the dedication, compassion, and professionalism our staff brings to this critical work every day. We remain committed to maintaining the high-quality care provided to the children we serve and to minimizing any impact on their well-being.”

Change is constant, and it's coming. There will always be a tomorrow, no matter how much you may try to ignore it. There are no guarantees in life, nor promises of a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something terrible hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, at any time, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. While many employees can read the writing on the wall, why do most assume it’s targeted at someone else? Are you now wondering, Am I Next?
