AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT AVID MEDICAL

Toano, Virginia-based Avid Medical, a brand owned by Owens & Minor and a manufacturer of specialty medical products including custom surgical and procedural kits, has announced the permanent closure of its Toano medical facility on or about November 25, 2026.

The closure will affect 419 employees, including 142 production coordinators, 71 assemblers, 30 material handlers, and 27 warehouse coordinators, as well as engineers, quality-control workers, supervisors, planners, and other employees.

According to a spokesperson, “Like all companies, Owens & Minor routinely evaluates its business operations to improve the customer experience. The closure of the Avid Toano facility is part of a broader long-term strategy to create more resiliency in our surgical kitting network and was already under consideration well before the divestiture. We truly appreciate the dedication of our teammates and are grateful for their continued support as we wind down operations in Williamsburg and transition them elsewhere in our kitting network.”

Change is constant, and it's coming. Tomorrow will always come, no matter how much you try to ignore it. Life offers no guarantees, nor promises of a bright future. We see good people being laid off through no fault of their own. Just because something terrible hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. No one is guaranteed to wake up tomorrow and still have a job by evening. While many employees can read the writing on the wall, why do most assume it’s targeted at someone else? Are you wondering, "Am I next?"

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT SAFESOURCE DIRECT

Broussard, Louisiana-based SafeSource Direct, a manufacturer of personal protective equipment (PPE) for essential workers, has announced an abrupt suspension of its nitrile glove and man-made fiber PPE manufacturing operations and appears to be under significant financial stress.

The operational halt impacts 541 employees.

President Justin Hollingsworth noted, "Like many in our industry, we have faced significant market challenges and made the difficult decision to suspend PPE manufacturing operations until market conditions improve. We are continuing construction of the NBR facility. We are deeply proud of what has been built and grateful to all those who contributed to our mission."

“We are proud of what our team accomplished as they boldly responded to the nation’s call to protect frontline workers and help strengthen America’s PPE supply chain in an unprecedented time. We successfully established a manufacturing base capable of supplying the nation with a reliable source of PPE, and it is extremely unfortunate that market conditions, which have been unsupportive for several years, do not permit sustained domestic production."
