AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT MASTERCLASS

San Francisco, California-based MasterClass is an educational technology provider offering

a streaming platform that creates hundreds of video lessons taught by 150+ experts, has announced a reduction in force.

The layoffs will impact 120 employees across all teams.

According to a company spokesperson, the company is cutting 20% of its team to “adapt to the worsening macro environment and get to self-sustainability faster. Our mission — to make it possible for anyone to learn from the best — hasn’t and won’t change. This very tough step will strengthen our position both financially and strategically, allowing us to serve our members, employees, and instructors for many years to come.”

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT SECTION4

New York, New York-based Section4, a start-up educational technology company producing college-level virtual instructional materials democratizing elite business school education, announces a major reorganization to refocus the company's educational services from individuals to corporate entities.

The reorganization resulted in a reduction of force that targeted 25% of the workforce, mainly product teams.

The decision appears to be driven by a revenue shortfall and the company's two- to three-week courses using prominent professors from elite schools were more costly than anticipated. Offerings from free online courses produced by the elite colleges themselves remain a significant competitive factor.

The reduction will impact 120 staff employees, and the school will leave another 120 roles unfilled.

President Melissa Gilliam noted, “Every effort has been made to limit the number of layoffs, and these actions will apply to approximately 1% of our employees. Still, we know that any reduction in staffing is painful. This is a day of loss for all of us. There is no way around this. We know our community may need time to adjust to these difficult changes. Yet, it is also a necessary step in ensuring our future. Over the coming months, there will be many efforts to reshape and reimagine the University in its most efficient and vital form.”
